Limited Company or Sole Trader

Generally it is easier to start a business as a sole trader and maybe change to a Limited Company at a later date. As a sole trader you need to register with the Inland Revenue - click the link to apply on line. You can form a Limited Company on line for relatively low cost using the links shown.

It is not necessary to register your company name but it is important to check that nobody else in your type of business and trading in the same territory are already using the name that you choose.

Legal Issues

Most businesses can start immediately without the need to get licensing or approval.

For businesses involved in food preparation you may need a Food Hygiene Certificate or an inspection of premises before starting.

Some types of businesses such as pubs, taxis and street traders will need a license. Our interactive tool is the quickest and easiest way to find out which licences, permits and registrations your business may need.

Businesses dealing with children (such as nurseries and childminders) will need a special licence which is renewed annually and all employees will need to be CRB approved.
